MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The No. 13/13 Rutgers women’s soccer team defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles, 3-1, Friday night at Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis. Junior Karla Schacher (Tofield, Alberta) earned the headline of the night, as she scored the first goal, assisted on the second, and set up the free kick that led to the third. The Scarlet Knights move to 9-1-2 overall, 3-0-1 in the BIG EAST. The Golden Eagles fall to 7-4-1 overall with a 1-2-1 record in conference play.
“The team played with great commitment and scored three great goals tonight,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “As a team, we defended well and took advantage of our opportunities. Marquette was very direct and applied great pressure on us. Every win on the road is a great victory.”
Marquette scored first, as Rosie Malone-Povolny tallied her first goal of the season in the 13th minute. MU’s Allison McBride assisted on the play.
The Scarlet Knights were undaunted, as the squad marched down the field and earned a free kick. Sophomore Julie Lancos (Belford, N.J.) took the kick, booting the ball into the box where Schacher headed it past Marquette goalkeeper Natalie Kulla for the equalizer.
“Karla’s goal was professional,” said Crooks. “It was a great finish on a set piece we have been working on. Julie kicks it as hard as anyone we have ever coached.”
Redshirt freshman April Price (Mechanicsville, Va.) scored her first career goal in the 20th minute. Schacher fed the ball to Price, who chipped it over Kulla’s head for the go-ahead score.
Lancos earned a tally of her own in the 54th minute. Schacher drew a penalty to earn a free kick from 25 yards out. Lancos ripped it past Kulla and sank it to the far post, putting the game away at 3-1.
A physical BIG EAST contest, two yellow cards were issued. In the 28th minute, Marquette’s Becky Ryan was issued a warning. Thirty minutes later, Ashley Medcalf (Waipahu, Hawaii) received a caution.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Scarlet Knights 19-6, though only six of MU’s shots were on goal. The shot total was seven tallies more than Rutgers has allowed in a single game thus far in 2009. Marquette took eight corner kicks to Rutgers’ zero. It was the most corners RU has allowed this season and the least the Scarlet Knights have been held to.
Rutgers returns to action Sunday, Oct. 4 at the University of South Florida. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
