Rutgers Men's Soccer Continues Road Trip at DePaul

CHICAGO, Ill. (October 8, 2009) – The Rutgers men’s soccer team travels west for a matchup against conference foe DePaul (6-5-0, 3-3-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday, Oct. 10. It is the second game of a three-match road trip for the Scarlet Knights. The game starts at 2 p.m. (EST) at Wish Field in Chicago, Ill.
The Scarlet Knights (5-5-0, 3-3-0 BIG EAST) took on St. John’s, losing the match 2-0 this past Wednesday. Sophomores Bryant Knibbs (Pine Bush, N.Y.) and Robbie McLarney (Londonderry, N.H.), and junior Andrew Cuevas (Wayne, N.J.) each had a shot on goal in the contest. The Red Storm scored in each half to earn the two-goal victory.
“We’re on a bit of a bad run, but this is going to be a big test of our metal to see how good we want to be. We’ve lost three straight BIG EAST games, we have performed fairly well in some of them, and you have to discount [the St. John’s] match to some extent. With the wind howling and the Fieldturf, there really wasn’t a lot of high quality soccer being played.
“We’ve got bumps and bruises. Robbie [McLarney] and Dave McVane are still not 100 percent and they were going to be our center midfield combination. Aly [Mazhar] is still out with a concussion but we do get Ibrahim [Kamara] and Sam Archer back which should be a help. I think another positive point is that Alex Morgans played well and hopefully that will steady our goalkeeper position.”
Rutgers is led in scoring byjunior Yannick Salmon (Westbury, N.Y.) and sophomore forwards Ibrahim Kamara (North Brunswick, N.J.). Salmon and Kamara each have four goals on the year, while sophomore Nate Bourdeau (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) is third on the team with two. Rutgers sophomore goalkeeper Alex Morgans (Jackson, N.J.) made his first start of the year against St. John’s and recorded five saves.
“It’s going to be another tough assignment going away to DePaul on another Fieldturf surface again,” said Reasso. “We’re in the position now where we’re not just looking to win but we’re desperate for points. We went from being ahead of the pack to being in the middle [of the standings]. It’s tightly bunched [five teams with nine or 10 points] right now and one result can do a whole lot for you. We have to go out there, be positive and try and get three points.”
In their last match, DePaul took on BIG EAST opponent Cincinnati. The Blue Demons won 2-1 in come-from-behind fashion. DePaul was outshot by the Bearcats 9-4 in the first half, but managed a comeback in the final minutes. Junior forward Alex Mangan and senior forward Steffen Vroom each scored goals for the Blue Demons. Mangan’s goal tied the game in the 60th minute, only two minutes after he entered the game. Vroom’s game winning goal came in the opening minutes of the first overtime period.
Vroom is Depaul’s leading goal-scorer with five, followed by Mangan with four. The Blue Demons are led in assists by senior midfielder Mark Plotkin with three. Freshman goalkeeper Joe Ferrari has started 10 games for the Blue Demons and has recorded 27 saves with a 1.64 goals against average.
