PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 9, 2009) – Rutgers field hockey dropped an 8-0 decision to Providence on Friday afternoon at Bauer Track & Field Complex.
The Scarlet Knights fell to 1-12, 0-3 in the BIG EAST while the Friars improved to 5-7 and 2-2 in league play.
"We have to be able to attack and defend together and [Providence] had a couple of potent forwards.” Said RU head coach Liz Tchou after the game. “When we come up with the ball we have to play together and play as a group. We had a couple of forwards that were just hanging back. There was just too much indecision during the game that allowed them to attack us."
PC scored three times in the first 15 minutes of action. The first tally came on the game’s first penalty corner when the visitors perfectly executed the corner with Kelly Grogan accounting for her first score of the season. Nearly three minutes later, Ashlyn Hudson dribbled down the left side, working her way past her defender. She skipped it past another into the far right corner to make it a 2-0 game.
The Friars went up 3-0 on a soft shot on the baseline by their leading scorer, Nellie Poulin. PC made it 4-0 at the half when Poulin fed Ali Shover on a breakaway with a two-timer into the cage.
RU had several opportunities, including two consecutive penalty corners in the 32nd minute. The first shot by senior Brittany Bybel (Millville, N.J.) was blocked while the second attempt by Sarah Dunn (Eaton, N.Y.) sailed high.
Friars forward Julie Riggieri scored two consecutive goals in early going of the second half, the first a rebound shot after a failed penalty corner and the second was a skip shot off a corner at the 42:31 mark. PC added two more goals for the final.
The Scarlet Knights had 10 shots on the afternoon but only two were on goal. The teams matched in corner attempts with six each.
Rutgers continues its home stand with a 2:00 non-conference match-up with Saint Joseph’s on Sunday, Oct. 11.
