PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 20, 2009) – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team picked up commitments from nine high school standouts who signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period, head coach Laura Brand-Sias announced. The group consists of seven New Jersey natives and two New York products.
Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.), Claire MacDougall (Moorestown, N.J.), Kelsey Miller (Moorestown, N.J.), Erin Turkot (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.), Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.), Sarah Mahon (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.), Chelsea Intrabartola (Commack, N.Y.) and Hollie DiMuro (West Babylon, N.Y.) will further their academic and athletic careers as members of the 2011 women’s lacrosse team.
Five of the seven New Jersey recruits competed in the NJSIAA/New Balance Tournament of Champions, including four which eventually advanced to the championship game. Bridgewater-Raritan (Sbrilli) qualified for the semifinals, while Moorestown (Martinelli, MacDougall, Miller) faced off against Mountain Lakes (Turkot) in the title match. Moorestown defeated Mountain Lakes 11-8 to capture the 2009 N.J. State Championship.
The nine-member class is also comprised of three Under Armour All-American Underclassmen in New Jersey representatives Turkot and Mahon, and New York selection Intrabartola.
“This class will come in at a perfect time,” said Brand-Sias. “This year’s team will have the stage set for the future of Rutgers Lacrosse and this recruited class will fit right in with the talent and attitude we have on the current team. I am ecstatic about the way things worked out.”
Martinelli, a varsity starter for Moorestown, was a member of Quaker squads that won three State Championships, three Group III Championships, three Group III Central Sectional Championships and three Burlington County Division Championships from 2007-2009. An All-American in 2009, she was the leading goal scorer with 61 goals, eclipsing her 2008 total of 24 tallies. Martinelli was also a First Team All-State and First Team All-South Jersey selection in 2009. She also excelled as a soccer player as a three-year varsity starter. Martinelli was twice named a Burlington County Scholastic League (BCSL) Second Team All-Star, helping her squad to three consecutive Group III South Jersey Championships and Group III League Championships.
“Katrina is a very polished high impact player,” said Brand-Sias.” She has dedicated herself to success and utilizes every tool she has to translate that onto the field. I have watched her career grow and I am extremely excited for her time as a Scarlet Knight”
MacDougall, another Moorestown product, was a defensive starter for the lacrosse team during her sophomore and junior seasons. She was a First Team Burlington County Scholastic League (BCSL) selection as a sophomore and junior and First Team All-South Jersey pick her junior year. MacDougall was a member of three of Moorestown’s championship squads, winning titles in the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions, Group III State, Group III Central Sectional and Burlington County Division championships. MacDougall was also a four-year varsity starter on the soccer team, earning second team BCSL honors as a junior and helping guide the squad to four-straight BCSL Championships.
“Claire has always stood out to me,” said Brand-Sias. “She is a solid, smart defender with the physical skill to succeed at this level. She is the product of an outstanding program and we are excited for her immediate contribution.”
Miller, the third player from Moorestown High School in New Jersey, was a three-year varsity letterwinner. She was an All-Burlington County First Team selection and received All-South Jersey Honorable Mention in 2009. Miller was a member of Quaker squads that won three State Championships, three Group III Championships, three Group III Central Sectional Championships and three Burlington County Division Championships from 2007-2009. Miller scored 50 goals for her Moorestown squad, adding eight assists and 30 ground balls.
“Kelsey is a smart and technical player,” said Brand-Sias. “She responds well to her role on the field and has achieved great success. She always seems to be in the right place. Her style of play will fit well with our system.”
Turkot, who helped her Mountain Lakes High School team to an appearance in the finals of the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions, was named to the Under Armour Underclass All-American Team in 2009. As a junior, she received the Most Improved Award and was an All-County Second Team selection and earned Honorable Mention All-Division. In addition to her achievements as a lacrosse player, Turkot also excelled in basketball and field hockey. She was a three-year starter and letterwinner in both sports, earning second team all-conference and third team All-Morris County honors in field hockey as a junior.
“Erin has a definite presence on the field,” said Brand-Sias. “Her size, speed, and athleticism give her an advantage before you even throw her lacrosse ability into the mix. She has just begun to tap into her potential and we look forward to the success she will bring to the table.”
Sbrilli, whose Bridgewater-Raritan team advanced to the semifinals of the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions, received Honorable Mention All-American and Second Team All State accolades in 2009. Sbrilli also was named to the First Team Skyland Conference. She led all of New Jersey girl’s lacrosse in goals scored with 125 in 2009 and was third in state in total number of points. Sbrilli competed on the Bridgewater-Raritan field hockey and basketball squads as well. A four-year starter in field hockey, Sbrilli was a Second Team Skyland Conference selection and third team all-area.
“Lauren is fast and athletic and she knows how to put the ball in the net,” said Brand-Sias. “She is a go-to player on her high school team and will continue to carry that load until she arrives at RU. I am looking forward to her continuing that scoring drive here on the Banks.”
Clements, a three-year member of the lacrosse team at Hopewell Valley High School, was a two-time winner of the Team Outstanding Offensive Player of the Year Award in 2008 and 2009. Clements received First Team All-Colonial Valley Conference (CVC) honors for two consecutive years (2008, 2009) and was the named the CVC Player of the year as a junior. Clements helped guide her team to titles in the Mercer County Champions and Sectional Champions for three-consecutive years. As a junior she scored 93 goals and chipped in 26 assists. Clements also competed on the soccer team, helping the team to a pair of divisional championships and the state sectional finals in her junior.
“Megan has just scratched the surface when it comes to lacrosse,” said Brand-Sias. “She is intense and athletic and improves significantly every time I see her. I am confident that she will have a highly successful career here at Rutgers.”
Mahon, a four-year member of the Manasquan varsity lacrosse team, was a 2009 Under Armour All-American Underclassmen Team. From her freshman through junior seasons, Mahon tallied 125 goals and 42 assists. She was awarded First Team All-Division and Third Team All-Shore honors in 2009 by the Asbury Park Press. Mahon was also named the Offensive Athlete of the Season in 2009 by the Coast Star and received honorable mention accolades in 2008. She was also a three-year varsity soccer player and four-year member of the varsity basketball team.
“You can’t help but notice Sarah when she plays,” said Brand-Sias. “Her height, speed, and skill allow her to pick defenses apart. She will transition into the college game well.”
Intrabartola, a four-year varsity lacrosse player for Commack High School in New York, also captained the squad as a junior. She was a member of the Under Armour All-American Underclassmen Team in 2009 and was in the US Lacrosse Schoolgirls Division National Tournament in 2008 and 2009. Intrabartola also participated in the IFWLA U17 World Championship in 2007 at Trent University in Canada. She was a two-time All-Suffolk County selection and member of the Long Island Empire Team in 2008 along with current Rutgers players Stephanie Anderson and Lily Kalata.
“Chelsea is a solid defender that is hard to beat”, said Brand-Sias. “Not only does she have great footwork and game sense, but her stick skills allow her to be a large factor in midfield transition. She has the base to grow quickly at the college level.”
DiMuro played four years of varsity lacrosse for West Babylon High School where she was an Academic All-American and two-time Honorable Mention All-County selection. DiMuro was a First Team Galaxy Award recipient. She also competed on a club level with the Long Island Yellow Jackets. DiMuro was also a four-year varsity soccer starter, earning all-conference and all-league honors.
“Hollie is as solid as any defender you can find,” said Brand-Sias. “She is strong and athletic and has the ability to dictate the tempo of a game. Her intensity on the field will fit right into our system and I expect her to have a successful career here at RU.”
