Rutgers Softball Falls To Notre Dame In BIG EAST Action

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers softball team (16-29, 3-15 BIG EAST) lost its BIG EAST doubleheader against Notre Dame (31-13, 13-3 BIG EAST) on Sunday, April 19, dropping game one 4-1 and game two 4-3.
Rutgers took the early advantage, plating a run in the bottom of the second inning of game one. Sarah Kalka (Moreno Valley, Calif.) led off the inning with a single up the middle. The senior would advance to second on a sacrifice bunt from Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.). Freshman Lindsey Curran (Monroe Twp., N.J.) would enter the contest to run for Kalka and score the game’s first run after classmate Brittany Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) doubled to deep left-center field.
Notre Dame rallied back in the top of the fourth with the first four Irish batters recording hits. ND registered five hits in the frame and scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
The Scarlet Knights would threaten in the sixth as Kalka and Craig recorded back-to-back base hits with only one out. Both runners would advance into scoring position, but RU was unable to plate either runner.
The Irish tacked on another score in the top of the sixth and held on for the 4-1 victory.
Rutgers also took an early lead in game two. After two quick outs in the bottom of the first,senior Amanda Heller (Belle Mead, N.J.) reached on catcher’s interference to extend the inning. Kalka made the Irish pay as she sent a 3-0 offering over the right field fence to stake RU to a 2-0 lead at the end of one.
Notre Dame stormed back in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs. The Irish saw five batters reach base in the inning as they took a 4-2 lead.
Senior Kate Valiante (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) helped pull the Scarlet Knights to within one run (4-3) with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, her first of the season and the 15th for her career but it was not enough as the Irish retired the final three batters of the inning to secure the 4-3 win.
Rutgers will continue is stretch of home contests on Tuesday, April 21, when it hosts Marist in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
