“This night was amazing,” said Guthrie. “It is something I am really never going to forget. To come out with the win like that, with the team coming together at the end of the game, made it all that much sweeter.”
“I am so happy for Erin,” said an emotional head coach Glenn Crooks. “She is an extremely hard worker. She organizes the team. She has the athleticism to stop tough shots. She makes the big plays, and I could not be more excited for her.”
Rutgers scored on a penalty kick by senior captain Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.) with seven minutes remaining in the game. Ashley Jones (Feasterville, Pa.) got a foul called in the box for a penalty kick as the Towson player tripped her on the right side of the field. DeMaio set up, and sent a rocket into the bottom left corner of the net past Kristen Sample for the game-winner.
RU just missed a goal with 20 minutes remaining in the game. Jones crossed to Karla Schacher (Tofield, Alberta), who got it past the goalkeeper, but not past Alex Davis of Towson who kicked it away from the goal.
The Scarlet Knights gave up their first corner kick of the season on a defensive block by Jen Anzivino (Middletown, N.J.). Erica Marshall took a hard shot that Anzivino blocked out of bounds. RU went 354 minutes without giving up a corner kick.
Rutgers had a chance to score in the first half, as Towson keeper Kristen Sample came out of goal, but April Price could not get it past the Tiger’s defender, who booted it out of the box.
RU dominated control of the ball again, not allowing Towson on their side of the field for most of the first half. Guthrie picked off four Towson crosses in the first half, as the Scarlet Knights did not allow a shot in the first stanza.
Overall, the Scarlet Knights outshot the Tigers 9-4. Guthrie made one save in the win, while Sample made four on the night. Rutgers took four corner kicks to Towson’s two.
Rutgers returns to action Sunday, as they travel to Happy Valley to take on No. 13/10 Penn State for the first road game of the season. The last time RU took on PSU, the Scarlet Knights advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, winning 2-1 in double overtime.
