Nov 22 | Women's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 18, 2010)—The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team has released its 2011 schedule, head coach Laura Brand announced today. The Scarlet Knights boast another highly-competitive schedule, including games against two NCAA tournament quarterfinalists from a year ago in Penn and Syracuse.
Rutgers’ 16-game regular season features an even split of eight home and away games. Six of those games will be against teams that finished their 2010 season in the top 20 of the Division I IWLCA rankings. The Scarlet Knights finished their 2010 campaign at number 18 in the rankings.
To start the season, Rutgers will play two games on the road in February. For their first game of the season, the Scarlet Knights take on Temple on Feb. 23. They will also face Cornell on Feb. 26 before heading back to Piscataway for their home opener.
The Scarlet Knights return home on March 2 to take on in-state rival Princeton under the lights at 7 p.m. On March 5 they continue their home-field swing against Delaware at 1 p.m. before hitting the road again to face Saint Joseph’s on March 9 at 4 p.m.
In its next two games, Rutgers hosts a pair of teams that closed out their 2010 seasons in the top 15. RU takes on Hofstra, who finished 2010 ranked 15th, on March 12 at 1p.m. In their next match on March 16 at 6p.m., they face Penn, who made it to the NCAA tournament quarterfinals and finished the 2010 season at 6th. Penn is the highest pre-season ranked opponent RU faces this season.
Rutgers hits the road to take on their first BIG EAST opponent of the season. The game against Connecticut is set for March 19, at 1 p.m. They return home to take on BIG EAST rival Syracuse, March 21, at 1 p.m. The Orange made it to the semi-finals of the 2010 NCAA Lacrosse Championships and finished their 2010 season ranked tenth.
The Scarlet Knights start the month of April with a four-game road stretch, their longest of the season. On April 1 they face Notre Dame, who finished their 2010 campaign ranked 14th. Next they face in-state rival Monmouth on April 5 at 2p.m., followed by Louisville on April 15. They finish their four-game road stance against Cincinnati on the 17th.
Rutgers will wrap up regular season action with three-straight BIG EAST home games. RU hosts Loyola (Md.), who ended their 2010 season ranked 13th, on April 21, at 1p.m. On April 27 at 7p.m., the Scarlet Knights take on Villanova, before finishing their regular season action against Georgetown.
The Scarlet Knights will look to earn a berth to the 2011 BIG EAST Women’s Lacrosse Championship, which span from May 5 to May 7.
Rutgers, which went 11-5 overall and 4-4 in BIG EAST play, finished the 2010 season ranked 18th in the final regular-season IWLCA Poll. The Scarlet Knights return 14 letterwinners, including a pair of IWLCA Mid-Atlantic Region selections in senior midfielder Marlena Welsh (Jarrettsville, Md.), and sophomore goalkeeper Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.). RU also returns two of its top three goal scorers from a year ago.
