Rutgers Field Hockey Announces 2010 Recruiting Class

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 30, 2010) – Rutgers head coach Liz Tchou announced Tuesday the signings of seven student-athletes to national letters of intent. Cornelia Duffin, Danielle Freshnock, Gia Nappi, Lisa Patrone, Kaitlyn Plouse, Laura Rose and Emily Strong will join the Scarlet Knights program beginning this fall. Six of the seven signees hail from the Garden State.

DUFFIN
|
“We are very excited about the seven members of the incoming class,” said Tchou. “They love the game of hockey and are even more passionate in taking the program to the next level with their ability and determination. The group is competitive, open to learning, and cannot wait to join our current players, who are showing great improvements in their overall fitness and skill execution. I am excited to watch these young ladies develop and lead Rutgers field hockey.”

FRESHNOCK
|
Duffin is a product of Moorestown (NJ) High School. The forward tallied a Burlington County record 60 career goals over three varsity seasons, while leading her team in scoring as a junior and a senior. She was a member of the 2007 Star-Ledger first team All-Group III team and a Courier Post first team All-South Jersey Group III selection. Named to the Star-Ledger all-state second team, Duffin also participated in the 2008 New Jersey Senior All-Star Game. Duffin helped pilot the Quakers to two Liberty Division titles, two Central Jersey Group III crowns and the 2006 Group III state title. She is a transfer from the University of Maryland, where she earned Dean’s List honors and was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Squad. Duffin saw action in 14 games in 2008 for the eventual national champions.

Freshnock is a midfielder from Middletown, N.J. She attends Middletown High School North, where she recorded 79 goals and 53 assists - breaking the school’s record - over her four-year scholastic career. Freshnock helped the Lions capture three (2006-2008) Shore Conference A North Division titles and the 2006 NJSIAA NJII Group IV Championship. She is a two-time All-Shore first team selection. Freshnock played travel field hockey for the club team Jersey Intensity and is a member of the USA Field Hockey Futures Elite program.

PATRONE

Nappi is a four-year varsity starter from West Essex High School in Fairfield, N.J. The forward registered 65 goals and 67 assists over her career, including 27 assists her senior season en route to picking up All-Essex County honors for four-straight seasons. The 2009 Star-Ledger Essex County Player of the Year, Nappi was also a four-time all-conference selection and selected to the all-North Jersey squad three-straight years. Nappi was named to the NFHCA Mid-Atlantic Regional team following her junior and senior seasons and helped direct her team to four-consecutive Essex Country Championships. In addition, the Knights won the Group II Section title and the state crown for three-straight years. In Nappi’s first year in 2009 Futures, she not only made the National Futures Championships, but was also asked to participate in USFHA Junior National Camp.

Patrone attends Washington Township High School in Sewall, N.J., where she was a two-time all-South Jersey Selection and twice was named South Jersey Midfielder of the Year. The four-year letterwinner and senior captain helped lead her team to the South Jersey finals this past fall. Patrone is a two-time All Group 4A honoree, a member of the National Honor Society and ranked in the top-10 percentile of her graduating class. She also participates in lacrosse, starting each contest her junior season, and is a member of the track squad. Patrone played club field hockey for Spirit of USA for the past six years and is a Futures Elite member.

ROSE

Plouse is a native of Hummelstown, Pa., and Lower Dauphin High School. The defender was a first team all-state honoree and Mid Pen Conference Division All-Star in 2009. She helped guide the Lady Falcons to four MPC Keystone Division titles and three-straight MPC crowns. With Plouse on the backline, Lower Dauphin grabbed the 2006 and 2009 PIAA-AAA state championship. She also was a two-year varsity starter on the soccer team, which captured the 2009 state title. A member of the National Honors Society for four years and a honor roll selection, Plouse played club field hockey for the Barracudas for three years.

STRONG

Rose also hails from Washington Township High School. A first team all-county and all-conference selection for three-straight seasons, she was also tabbed to the All-South Jersey first team in 2008 and 2009. Rose is a 2009 second team all-state honoree and a member of the honor roll. She played club for the South Jersey Edge the past four seasons, serving as the team’s captain.
Strong comes to Rutgers from Shawnee High School, the alma mater of Tchou. A three-year varsity starter, she helped guide the Renegades to the 2007 NJ Tournament of Champions and a No. 7 national ranking. Strong has twice been named All-South Jersey and three times secured all-Burlington County honors. The 2009 second team All-State honoree played her club field hockey for Spirit of USA. Strong is a member of the National Honor Society and also was a two-time varsity letter winner in lacrosse. Strong is also currently a Futures Elite Member.
