
Rutgers Softball Splits With Providence on Rutgers Day

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 24, 2010) – Rutgers softball (17-27, 3-9) split the doubleheader with Providence (18-23, 7-8) Saturday, April 24 on Rutgers Day at the RU Softball Complex. The Scarlet Knights upended the Friars 3-0 in game one, falling in game two by a score of 6-1. It marked the first time RU has defeated PC since March 26, 2006.
Senior Nicole Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) pitched game one for RU, allowing just two hits in seven scoreless innings while fanning nine. Junior Jen Meinheit (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a triple in game one.
RU got on the board in the first inning, as Meinheit tripled down the line in left field and classmate Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) sacrificed her in with a sacrifice to left.
Freshman Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) blastedthe ball to deep left center for a two-out double in the fifth, but the Scarlet Knights could not capitalize.
Rutgers added two more in the bottom of the sixth as Meinheit led things off with a single to the right of the PC second baseman Justine Stratton. Sophomore Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and Craig moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt down the first base line. Freshman Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) brought the runners home with a single through the left side for two RBI, giving the Scarlet Knights a 3-0 lead they would not relinquish.
Freshman Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.) started game two for the Scarlet Knights, going an inning and a third, allowing two runs (none earned) on one hit. Nicole Lindley came in for relief, giving up four earned runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Sophomore Noelle Sisco (Towaco, N.J.) got two outs, allowing four hits and classmate Holly Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) finished the game
Providence put up two runs in the top of the second on a single to the shortstop, two RU errors and a sacrifice bunt by Teresa Bertels.
PC added four more in the top of the fifth on four singles and a wild pitch, including a two-run hit up the middle by Stratton.
RU got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, as sophomore Kylee Bishop (Tacoma, Wash.) was hit by a pitch and Madden moved her over with a single just over the second baseman’s head in right field. Freshman Jen Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) walked, loading the bases, but junior Mickenzie Alden (Spokane, Wash.) hit a hard line drive right to the first baseman Christy Becker for two outs. Sophomore Lindsey Curran (Monroe, Twp., N.J.) reached on an error by Becker, driving in a run.
Rutgers threatened in the bottom of the seventh, as Harabedian singled down the left field line, moving Madden over to second, but RU could not capitalize.
The Scarlet Knights continue the three-game series with Providence Sunday, April 25 at noon.
