
Rutgers Women's Lacrosse Named IWLCA Academic Squad

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 17, 2010) – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse program was recently recognized as an Academic Squad for the 2010 season by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), it was announced. It marks the second straight season that the Scarlet Knights received the distinction.
“Academic success is always one of our main goals and this year was no different,” said head coach Laura Brand-Sias. “The team did a great job representing this program on the field and in the classroom and I am confident we will continue to excel and grow in both areas.”
Teams qualify for Academic Squad status by maintaining a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.0 or greater. The Scarlet Knights were one of schools schools in the BIG EAST Conference to be named to the list.
Rutgers, which went 11-5 overall and 4-4 in BIG EAST play, finished the 2010 season ranked 18th in the final regular-season IWLCA Poll. Four Scarlet Knights – recently graduated Brooke Cantwell and Mary Cryan, rising senior Marlena Welsh (Jarrettsville, Md.), and rising sophomore goalkeeper Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) – were also named to the IWLCA Mid-Atlantic Region Team.
