COLLEGE PARK, Md. (September 12, 2010) – The Rutgers field hockey team fell to host Maryland, 8-1, on Sunday afternoon at Terrapin Invitational.
The Terrapins, ranked No. 2 in the 2010 Kookaburra/NFHCA Collegiate National Coaches Poll, improved to 5-0 with the win while the Scarlet Knights moved to 1-5.
“Maryland is going to vie for the National Championship in November is my prediction. They are a solid team, all-around and will be the best team we play,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “Now we enter into Big East competition, we have seen strong teams with a variety of playing styles. The experience we gained was invaluable as we get ready for what Syracuse will throw at us on Saturday. There is nothing more exciting than competing in the Big East.”
Rutgers had one penalty corner and five shots on goal on the afternoon. Senior Heather Garces registered the Scarlet Knights’ lone score.
“We improved on some key aspects of our play against American, which was nice to see,” said Tchou. “The communication between the lines was better and our defense organization better after making some adjustments. We were disappointed in this loss, because there are still lost opportunities inside the 25, but we are improving, overall”
