Oct 02 | Field Hockey
NEW YORK, N.Y. (October 2, 2011) – Rutgers field hockey junior Cornelia Duffin (Moorestown, N.J.) tallied her first goal in a Scarlet Knights uniform to tie the game in the first half against Columbia, but the Lions responded with the game-winner by Gabby Kozlowski 1:30 later to take the 2-1 victory in Sunday afternoon’s nonconference matchup at Columbia Field Hockey Venue. All three of the game’s goals were scored within a 1:43 span of the opening stanza.
RU falls to 3-8 (1-2 BIG EAST) on the year, snapping a two-game win streak, while Columbia improves to 4-5 after winning three of its last five games.
The Columbia’s Liz Malone struck first, 22:21 into the contest with a tip-in on a Molly Andrews shot.
Thirteen seconds later Duffin slotted a shot past keeper Christie O’Hara for the first of her RU career, tying the game at one.
Kozlowski responded for the go-ahead goal 24:04 into the contest for the game-winner and final score of the game.
Rutgers held the advantage in shots, 14-8, and penalty corners 11-3, but O’Hara recorded seven saves on the afternoon en route to the victory. RU keeper Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) stopped two shots in the loss.
“Today was the most complete game that we’ve played all season,” head coach Liz Tchou said. “We had quality scoring opportunities including a goal that was called back with 25 seconds left in the game. It was great to see the girls play with emotion and fight but certainly the loss is disappointing.”
Redshirt freshman Emily Strong (Medford, N.J.) saw her first collegiate action in the contest, while senior Kat Rodziewicz (Ocean, N.J.) made her return to the lineup following a three-game absence.
The Scarlet Knights continue on the road next weekend against BIG EAST foe No. 19 Louisville on Saturday at noon. The match will be the second BIG EAST contest in the past three games for Rutgers.
