ITHACA, N.Y. (October 23, 2011) – Rutgers field hockey forward Gia Nappi (Fairfield, N.J.) paced the Scarlet Knights to a 2-0 victory in Sunday afternoon’s nonconference matchup against Cornell at Marsha Dodson Field. The sophomore registered a goal and an assist in the contest to surpass her goal, assist and point total from last season.
RU rebounds from Saturday and improves to 5-11 on the season, while the Big Red drops to 7-8 overall.
“I was proud to see the girls play with energy after traveling from Amherst last night,” head coach Liz Tchou said. “It was a good test for us to play back-to-back games like we did this weekend. The team played together for 70 minutes today and I attribute that to the girls’ preparation during the week.”
Ashley Yanek (Northampton, Pa.), on the left side, centered a pass for the Nappi tip-in to put RU out in front at the 12:50 mark of the first half. The Fairfield, N.J. native finished the afternoon with a game-high five shots.
The Scarlet Knights held a 9-1 shot advantage and a 4-1 penalty corner margin at the end of first 35 minutes of action.
Rutgers lengthened its lead following a penalty corner in the 51st minute. Carlie Rouh (Berlin, N.J.) shuffled a pass to Nappi, who sent the ball right back for Rouh to rocket into the cage. Rouh and Nappi are tied with a team-high six goals apiece.
Cornell’s goalkeeper Alex Botte finished the day with eight saves on 17 Scarlet Knight shots, while RU’s Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) earned her fifth victory of 2011 with three stops.
Rutgers returns home for its final weekend of the regular season. The Scarlet Knights take on their final BIG EAST opponent in No. 4 Connecticut on Friday. Senior Day will follow on Sunday against No. 3 Maryland.
