Rutgers Alumni Game a Success On and Off the Field
Oct 05 | Men's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 5, 2011) - With more than 60 alumni in attendance, Rutgers men's lacrosse program staged a successful Saturday of activities, including a game pitting alumni against the current squad and an alumni-vs.-alumni match. A reception and meet and greet followed the games, putting a cap to a strong showing of support for the Scarlet Knights and first-year head coach Brian Brecht.
"I was very excited with the turnout," Brecht said. "I was also extremely happy with the opportunity to play the younger alumni in a competitive game with officials to get our squad ready for our fall scrimmages with UMass and Maryland in two weeks."
Brecht also liked what he saw on the field, making note of a recent alumnus of Rutgers' program.
"All-American Chris Mattes (2011, honorable mention) still has it, as he was a machine facing off." Brecht said. "It was a great day for the Rutgers men's lacrosse program as we hope to grow this event and make it a staple for the Scarlet Knights every fall."
The RU leader went on to thank the efforts of former RU head coach Tom Hayes (1975-2000) and Dr. Earle Peterson in helping make the event a success. Hayes compiled a 194-156 record in his time "On The Banks" and currently stands in Rutgers record books as the program's all-time winningest coach. Peterson has been a valued friend to the Rutgers lacrosse program for over 40 years as a supporter, fan, contributor and advisor to players and coaches.
RU is back in action with fall scrimmages against UMass (9:30 a.m.) and Maryland (1:30 p.m.) on Sunday, Oct. 16. Click here to read about the Homecoming events planned for that weekend.
