Oct 07 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 7, 2011) – Rutgers field hockey continues an important stretch of its schedule with the first of two BIG EAST matchups. The Scarlet Knights will make the trip to Kentucky to face off with nationally ranked Louisville on Saturday, Oct. 8. The contest is scheduled for noon at Trager Stadium.
“Louisville is always a tough game for us,” head coach Liz Tchou said. “We have to really focus on ourselves and what we are doing. Our girls have done a really good job of taking each game as it comes and improving during the week. We have to be able to finish on our opportunities, and that’s what we will continue to work on this week in practice.”
RU (3-8, 1-2 BIG EAST) split a pair of games over the weekend, with a critical 3-2 win against conference opponent Georgetown and a 2-1 loss to Columbia in what coach Tchou called the squad’s most complete game of the season.
The Scarlet Knights scored three-unanswered goals versus the Hoyas, including a one by Nicole Gentile (Jamison, Pa.) with 52 seconds remaining to grab their first BIG EAST win of the season. Gentile, who accumulated a game-high six shots on Friday, earned a spot on this week’s BIG EAST Honor Roll.
Junior forward Carlie Rouh (Berlin, N.J.) tallied her seventh point in five games with a pair of assists on Friday. Her three goals, nine points and 25 shots this season are all career-highs.
Goalkeeper Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) stopped a career-high seven shots in the game against GU and enters the week fifth in the conference in saves (49) and fourth in goals against average (2.36).
Rutgers, who sits 14th nationally (tied for first in the BIG EAST) in penalty corners per game (8.55), will look to continue to generate scoring opportunities this weekend, as the Scarlet Knights look for their first-ever win against the Cardinals.
No. 20 Louisville (7-5, 1-2 BIG EAST) concluded a five-game span of nationally ranked opponents on Tuesday with a 2-1 loss to No. 18 Ohio State. The Cardinals’ roster features a young lineup with five freshmen and one sophomore among its starters. However, it is the production of senior Haley Turner that leads the charge. Turner’s 21 points – seven goals and seven assists – ranks third in the BIG EAST.
