Dec 08 | Men's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (December 8, 2011) - The Rutgers men's soccer program was a recipient of the 2011 NSCAA College Team Academic Award, the association announced. The Scarlet Knights were one of 218 men's teams honored, while Rutgers was one of 154 institutions to have both its men's and women's programs recognized.
"This is an amazing accomplishment and a credit to how hard our guys work both on the field and in the classroom," said head coach Dan Donigan. "We are committed to making education the number one priority for all our players. The academic support staff, particularly our advisor Randi Larson and our administration work so hard to make sure that the student-athletes are given every opportunity to succeed.
"Myself and the coaching staff could not be more proud of every guy on our team. We always tell our guys that when things go well off the field, it has a positive effect on the soccer field and vice versa."
To receive the NSCAA Team Academic Award, the squad must have compiled a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
The Scarlet Knights enjoyed one of the best seasons in the program history, advancing to the third round of the NCAA Tournament after upending fourth-seeded and eighth-ranked Boston College on the road. RU also posted the best turnaround in BIG EAST competition since the league expanded to 16 teams in 2005. Rutgers went 10-7-4 overall and 6-1-2 in conference action to finish second in the league. The Scarlet Knights had posted just one BIG EAST win in 2010 and four wins total.
