STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (March 12, 2011) – The No. 19 Rutgers men’s lacrosse team (4-1) dropped its first game of the season, 11-6, at Penn State (2-3) this afternoon at Bigler Field. RU was led by Anthony Terranova (Flemington, N.J.) who tallied a pair of goals for the Scarlet Knights.
RU got out to a quick start to begin the game behind goals from Andrew D’Agostino (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.) less than three minutes into the game. The early surge by the Scarlet Knights didn’t faze the Nittany Lions as they quickly responded with three goals of their own to take a 3-2 lead with a minute to play in the first. Rutgers responded when Duncan Clancy (Princeton, N.J.) found the back of the net with 34 seconds left in the frame to knot the score but PSU was able to strike again with 12 seconds remaining in the period to retake the lead.
Penn State started the second period on a strong note with a pair of goals less than a minute apart to push its lead to 6-3. RU was able to get a goal back when Mike Diehl (Flemington, N.J.) scored with just over a minute before the half to send the Scarlet Knights to the locker room with some momentum.
RU got off to a quick start in the second half using a pair of goals from Terranova to even the score at six with just under two minutes to go in the third. Unfortunately for Rutgers, PSU scored with five seconds to go in the third to regain the lead and momentum going into the final period.
Penn State used the spark from the goal late in the third to control the fourth and add four more goals to earn an 11-6 victory.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Tuesday, March 15, when they welcome Jacksonville to the RU Turf Field for a 7 p.m. matchup.
