PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 19, 2011) – The Rutgers men’s lacrosse team (5-2) dropped a 12-4 decision to the No. 10 Army Black Knights (5-2) this afternoon at the RU Turf Field. For the game, RU was led by defenseman Andrew D’Agostino (Syracuse, N.Y.) who caused four turnovers and scooped up seven ground balls.
Army got out to a quick start scoring off the opening faceoff just 10 seconds into the game. RU responded quickly when Mike Diehl (Flemington, N.J.) scored off a beautiful pass from Kory Kelly (Princeton, N.J.) to even the score at 1-1. Army was able to tack on another goal at the 5:03 mark of the first and took a 2-1 lead into the second period.
In the second, the Black Knights came out on fire scoring the first seven goals of the period to push their lead to 9-1. RU was able to add goals from Nick Zerrillo (Brewerton, N.Y.) and Duncan Clancy (Princeton, N.J.) just before the half to go into the break down 9-3.
RU started the second half strong, getting a goal three minutes in on a nice move from Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.). Klimchak avoided an Army defender, gave a pump fake and then rifled the shot past the Army keeper to cut the Army lead to five. The Klimchak goal sparked the RU defense which was able to hold the Black Knights scoreless for the rest of the third.
The Army offense was strong again in the final period as the Black Knights added three more goals to seal a 12-4 victory.
RU returns to action on Sunday, March 27, when they host No. 3 Notre Dame in a noon matchup.
