PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 20, 2011) – The Rutgers softball team (18-23, 6-6) takes on BIG EAST rival DePaul (26-11, 10-1) in a three-game series this Friday and Saturday at the RU Softball Complex. The doubleheader on Friday, April 22, will start at noon. First pitch Saturday will be thrown at 11 a.m.
Saturday’s game will serve as Senior Day for Jen Meinheit (Anaheim Hills, Calif.), Mickenzie Alden (Spokane, Wash.) and Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.). Together, the three have combined for 88 wins and last season helped the Scarlet Knights make their first BIG EAST Championship in 12 years.
The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 7-6 loss to Stony Brook despite holding a four-run lead going into the seventh inning. Junior Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) extended her hit streak to 11 games with a two RBI single in the fifth inning.
Lindley ranks first in the BIG EAST and 20th overall in the NCAA in batting average (.437). As a team, Rutgers ranks 19th in the nation in stolen bases per game with a 1.88 average. First baseman Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this week for her outstanding performance against Providence College, helping the Scarlet Knights claim their second-straight BIG EAST series win of the season.
The Blue Demons are on a six-game winning streak after sweeping Pittsburgh in a road doubleheader last week. DePaul hits .373 as a team and has outscored their opponents 83-29. The Blue Demons are led by Kirsten Verdun and Bree Brown, who were both named to the league’s weekly honor roll Monday. DePaul leads the all-time series against Rutgers by a 10-2 mark, including a 3-0 win last season in the BIG EAST Championship.
