
Rutgers Women's Lacrosse Falls To Sixth-Ranked Loyola

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 23, 2011) – Rutgers women’s lacrosse (8-6, 2-4 BIG EAST) returned home following a four-game road trip to host BIG EAST foe and No. 6 Loyola (13-1, 5-1 BIG EAST) at Yurcak Field on Saturday. Despite a strong first-half effort, the Scarlet Knights came up short as the Greyhounds earned a 15-6 win.
Both team battled the rain-soaked conditions, playing to a 3-3 tie at halftime. The Scarlet Knights traded goals with the Greyhounds as senior attacker Katherine Marino (Hillsborough, N.J.) gave RU its first score of the game, followed by back-to-back tallies from senior midfielder Marlena Welsh (Jarrettsville, Md.).
Loyola broke the deadlock in the second half with Grace Gavin scoring four-straight to give her team a 7-3 lead. Marino scored her second goal of the game, cutting the deficit to three at 7-4, however, the Greyhounds responded with a 6-0 run to pull ahead 13-4. Each team scored twice more over the final three minutes as senior attacker Kristen Anderson (Wading River, N.J.) and freshman attacker Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.) posted goals for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers will return to action on Tuesday, April 26, when it hosts Villanova at 7 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
