
Rutgers Women's Lacrosse Closes Out Regular Season Sunday

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 28, 2011) – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team (9-6, 3-4 BIG EAST), coming off a 13-10 victory over BIG EAST rival Villanova, will host No. 16 Georgetown in its final regular season game on Sunday, May 1 at 1 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
Prior to the start of the game, Rutgers will honor its six seniors – Kristen Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.), Eileen Ghent (Silver Spring, Md.), Shawn Lopez (Monkton, Md.), Katherine Marino (Hillsborough, N.J.), Mary Moran (Florence, N.J.), and Marlena Welsh (Jarretsville, Md.) – who will all be playing their final home game.
On the season, the Scarlet Knights are led by a group of double-digit scorers. Senior midfielder Welsh leads the way for Rutgers with 44 points on a team-leading 34 goals and 10 assists. Junior midfielder Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.), is a close second with 34 points on 27 goals and seven assists.
Following Welsh and Steinberg in scoring are Anderson and junior attacker Lindsey Watts (Hillsborough, N.J.). Anderson has recorded 29 points on 24 goals and five assists, while Watts has tallied 27 points on 24 goals and three assists.
The Hoyas (8-6, 6-1 BIG EAST) are coached by Ricky Fried, who is entering his seventh season. Georgetown is led by Jordy Kirr and Sophia Thomas. On the season, Kirr leads the squad with 47 points on 23 goals and a team-leading 24 assists, while Thomas has recorded 41 points on a team-leading 33 goals and eight assists.
Rutgers and Georgetown will square off for the 21st time on Sunday with the Hoyas holding the advantage in the all-time series 17-3. Georgetown won the most recent meeting against the Scarlet Knights 19-12 on April, 17, 2010 in Washington, D.C. Welsh led the Scarlet Knights with three goals against Georgetown.
