PISCATAWAY, N.J. (June 13, 2011) – The Rutgers field hockey team has released its 2011 schedule, head coach Liz Tchou announced today. The Scarlet Knights face a difficult schedule, highlighted by matchups with three teams that advanced to last season’s NCAA Tournament, including defending National Champion Maryland.
“Having this many players return, we look forward to continuing to further improve upon our chemistry and performance on the field against a difficult schedule,” Tchou said. “We ended the spring with great energy and motivation and our staff is very confident that it will carry over into the summer months and the upcoming season. We’re going to be an exciting team to watch compete.”
After beginning the fall with a pair of scrimmages at Drexel (Aug. 20) and vs. Princeton (Aug. 23), the Scarlet Knights will open their regular season slate with a four-game homestand.
RU welcomes James Madison (Aug. 26) and Delaware (Aug. 28) to the Bauer Track and Field Complex in the team’s opening weekend, before hosting William & Mary (Sept. 2) and Miami of Ohio (Sept. 4) the following weekend.
The Scarlet Knights hit the road for the first time when they travel to Durham, N.H. for matchups with Maine (Sept. 10) and New Hampshire (Sept. 11).
Rutgers opens its BIG EAST schedule at defending conference champion Syracuse on Sept. 16, before returning home to face in-state rival Monmouth on Sept. 18.
The following weekend, RU returns to the road, traveling to Pennsylvania for clashes with BIG EAST rival Villanova (Sept. 24) and Bucknell (Sept. 25).
The Scarlet Knights welcome Georgetown to Bauer for their BIG EAST home opener on Sept. 30, before heading to the Empire State to battle Columbia on Oct. 2.
RU wraps up its BIG EAST road slate when it faces the Louisville Cardinals on Oct. 8 and then returns home for games with Providence (Oct. 14) and Lafayette (Oct. 16).
After a midweek matchup at Cornell (Oct. 23) to close out their road schedule, the Scarlet Knights welcome a pair of perennial NCAA contenders, UConn and Maryland, to Bauer to close out the regular season.
Rutgers hosts the Huskies in its final BIG EAST contest on Friday, Oct. 28, and welcomes defending National Champion Maryland to the Garden State on Sunday, Oct. 30.
Following the regular season, RU will look to advance to its second-consecutive BIG EAST Tournament held on the campus of Syracuse University Nov. 5 and 6.
The 2011 Scarlet Knights return 18 letterwinners and 10 starters, including their leading goal scorer and point getter, from a squad that advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2003.
