PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Aug. 22, 2011) – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse program was recognized by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) as an Academic Squad, it was announced. This marks the third-straight season that the Scarlet Knights have received the distinction.
“Academic success is always one of our main goals, and this award is a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication affiliated with our program,” said head coach Laura Brand-Sias. “This shows our student-athletes, coaches and support staff are all committed to that goal. I am very proud of where this program is headed and how our players and staff represent us on a daily basis.”
Teams qualify for Academic Squad status by maintaining a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.0 or greater. The Scarlet Knights were one of seven schools in the BIG EAST Conference to be named to the list.
Rutgers also earned a perfect APR score in May and had 20 of its 28 members selected as a BIG EAST Academic All-Star.
Rutgers finished the season 9-7 overall and had five Scarlet Knights – Rebecca Alley (Tewksbury, N.J.), Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.), Katherine Marino (Hillsborough, N.J.) Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.) and Marlena Welsh (Jarretsville, Md.) – named to the IWLCA Mid-Atlantic Region Team.
