PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 1, 2011) - Rutgers field hockey continues its four-game homestand with a pair of matchups against William & Mary and Miami (Ohio) this weekend at Bauer Track and Field Complex. The Scarlet Knights field hockey team will make its first appearance of the 2011 season on RVision when it takes on the Tribe.
Rutgers (1-1) is coming off a split in its opening weekend. The Scarlet Knights posted a 5-1 win versus James Madison before falling short against Delaware, 4-2. Senior Kat Rodziewicz (Ocean, N.J.) earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after she tabbed a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the victory over the Dukes.
Sophomore forward Gia Nappi (Fairfield, N.J.) recorded a goal in back-to-back games and leads the team with five points thus far this season.
"During the JMU match we were able to do the kinds of things we wanted to do in regards to scoring and having opportunities," head coach Liz Tchou said. "Against Delaware we had those same types of opportunities but weren't able to finish."
RU will host its third-consecutive Colonial Athletic Association opponent in William & Mary on Friday, Sept. 2. Game time is set for 4 p.m., at Bauer Track and Field Complex.
The Tribe has yet to begin its 2011 campaign, as it saw its opening weekend slate get cancelled due to Hurricane Irene. William & Mary returns less than half its starters from a team that went 4-14 last season. The Tribe will look to juniors Ashley Kyle and Leah Zamesnik to lead the offensive attack this year, having led the team in scoring the past two seasons.
"I'm looking forward to Friday's game against William & Mary because I think we are going to be able to pull together a more consistent and disciplined game," Tchou continued.
Rutgers field hockey will make its season debut on RVision on Friday night, as a taping of the game will be available on www.ScarletKnights.com following the contest. Danny Breslauer and Mike Becker will be on the call and will provide fans with a 10-minute pre-game show, intermission interview with a Rutgers coach and a postgame show.
RU follows with a battle against Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, Sept. 4, at noon. The RedHawks have dropped two-straight to begin the season. Goalkeeper Sarah Mueller has recorded seven saves in each of the first two matches, while Brittany Branco has added to the defensive efforts, notching two defensive saves. Despite returning eight starters from last season, the RedHawks have yet to put the ball in the cage in 2011.
