SYRACUSE, N.Y. (September 16, 2011) – Rutgers junior forward Carlie Rouh (Berlin, N.J.) tabbed her second goal of the season, but No. 5 Syracuse used a balanced attack to defeat the Scarlet Knights 5-1 in Friday’s field hockey BIG EAST opener at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Five different players scored for the Orange in the victory.
SU improves to 4-2 (1-0 BIG EAST) on the season, while RU slips to 1-5 (0-1 BIG EAST).
The Orange jumped out in front with two goals in the opening 17 minutes of action, by Amy Kee and Kelsey Millman. Senior midfielder Martina Loncarica moved into first place in points on Syracuse’s all-time list, with an assist on Kee’s goal.
SU took a 3-0 advantage 2:23 into the second half with Heather Susek’s fourth goal of year.
Rouh put the Scarlet Knights on the board at the 51:20 mark, off a corner by Mackenzie Noda (Allentown, Pa.) and a stop by Christie Morad (Marlton, N.J.).
Jordan Page and Liz McInerney added some insurance for the Orange, each tallying a goal with less than ten minutes remaining in the contest.
“We could not sustain attacks inside the 25,” head coach Liz Tchou said. “Over time, Syracuse wore us down, especially in the second half. We turned the ball over after gaining ground and Syracuse was able to capitalize on our mistakes. Our outletting improved from last week, but we did not value possession inside the 25. I was pleased with certain areas of improvement, but we need to create more scoring opportunities for ourselves”
Syracuse outshot RU 16-2 and had a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners on the evening. Goalkeeper Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) recorded five saves in the loss.
RU returns to the Bauer Track and Field Complex on Sunday with a matchup against Monmouth. Sunday marks the Scarlet Knights’ annual “Stick it to Cancer,” game. Log on to ScarletKnights.com for more information
