PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 2, 2011) – Rutgers field hockey jumped on the board first for the third time this season, as Carlie Rouh (Berlin, N.J.) scored her first goal of the season but Jesse Ebner’s two second half goals propelled William & Mary to a 2-1 victory in Friday’s nonconference match at Bauer Track and Field Complex.
The Scarlet Knights have dropped two-straight and fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Tribe is 1-0 after winning tonight’s season-opener.
While both teams saw plenty of chances, neither was able to take advantage of its scoring opportunities early in the opening half. The Scarlet Knights remained on the attack and drew a pair of penalty corners with under six minutes remaining in the first stanza. Gia Nappi (Fairfield, N.J.) found fellow sophomore Lisa Patrone (Sewell, N.J.) in the middle of the circle following the corner. Patrone made a quick pass to Rouh who placed the shot home to become the sixth RU player to record a goal in 2011.
The Tribe evened the score at the 44:28 mark as Ebner collected a save by RU goalkeeper Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) and blasted the rebound into the cage.
Just 1:52 later Ebner struck again connecting with Johnson to put away her second score of the match and giving William & Mary the 2-1 advantage.
Despite the Tribe exploding for six penalty corners in the second half, Stuby kept the Scarlet Knights close, recording five saves on the night, but RU ran out of time for the comeback.
“If you look at the stats, we gave up three corners in the first half,” head coach Liz Tchou said. “But then we came back out and gave up six in the second half. We cannot give up that many corners. A lot of those tackles that led to the corners were poor tackling and poor technique. If we had cleaned that up we would have had more opportunities instead of being on our heels. When you have nine corners it’s really tough on the defense, but Sarah Stuby had a great game and really had some great saves.”
A taping of today’s contest will be airing on RVision at ScarletKnights.com. Danny Breslauer and Mike Becker were on the call and provided fans with a pre-game and postgame show.
RU concludes is four-game homestand with a matchup against Miami (Ohio) on Sunday at noon. The Scarlet Knights snagged a 1-0 victory in the two’s only meeting, back in 1984.
