PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 4, 2011) – Despite holding an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners, Rutgers field hockey was unable to convert, as the Scarlet Knights fell to Miami (Ohio), 3-0 in Sunday afternoon’s nonconference match at Bauer Track and Field Complex. Jackie Nguyen and Olivia Miller each tabbed a goal and an assist for the RedHawks.
“I thought we played better today than we did on Friday,” head coach Liz Tchou said. “We had three corners in the first half and eight in the second but we have to be able to score off them and get more scoring opportunities. I’m happy that our stats improved today, as well as our defense but we need to be able to finish.”
RU drops its third-straight and moves to 1-3 on the year, while Miami (Ohio) (1-3) grabs its first win of the season and first under head coach Inako Puzo.
Rutgers allowed the opening goal of the contest for the first time this year. Nguyen slotted a pass past the front of the net to a wide open Kaitlin Evans for the tap in, to take the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
RU recorded eight of its 11 corners in the second half but it was Miami’s Miller who connected for her second goal in as many games at the 48:36 mark to put the RedHawks on top 2-0. Nguyen tallied her first goal of the season with under two minutes remaining to put the game out of reach.
Sarah Mueller earned her first shutout of the season, posting five saves on the afternoon.
RU goalkeeper Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) stopped four shots in the loss.
RU returns to action when it hits the road for the first time this season when it takes on New Hampshire. The Scarlet Knights hold a 3-0 series advantage against the Wildcats.
