PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 3, 2012) - The Rutgers men's lacrosse team has a set of polishing opportunities prior to the official start of the 2012 season, taking part in exhibition games with Lehigh and Penn in Philadelphia Saturday. RU will face Lehigh at 11 a.m., and take on Penn at 1 p.m.
First-year head coach Brian Brecht's initial squad "On the Banks" features eight returning starters and 32 total returning players from a season ago. Scoring experience is at a surplus with 91 percent of RU's point-scoring returning from last season. Senior captains Jacob Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md.), Will Mangan (Maplewood, N.J.), Zachary Zenda (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) and Nicholas Zerrillo (Brewerton, N.Y.) look to provide strong leadership for the Scarlet Knights, along with sophomore attackman Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.), who earned second-team All-BIG EAST honors in 2011.
Lehigh compiled a 7-9 overall record last season, scoring 167 goals while allowing 150 to its opponents. Penn made the NCAA Championship a season ago, bowing out in the first round to cap an 8-7 season. The Quakers played four overtime games in 2011, notching a 2-2 mark.
The Scarlet Knights begin their 2012 schedule on the road at Duke on Saturday, Feb. 11. The visit to Durham, N.C., matches Rutgers against a squad that advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament in 2011. The game is set to begin at noon.
