CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 10, 2012) - Rutgers softball fell for the seventh time in eight games as the Scarlet Knights were defeated 6-1 by Fordham on Saturday morning at Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in day two of the USF Under Armour Showcase Tournament.
Fordham (6-11) jumped out on top in the first thanks to a walk and a two-out two-run bomb to left field from Brianna Turgeon, giving the Rams a 2-0 advantage after one. RU (5-10) looked to retaliate in the bottom half of the inning as an error and a walk put runners on first and second with one out, however FU pitcher Jen Mineau retired the next two batters to shutdown the Scarlet Knights.
The Rams added another run in the second, putting its lead runner on, on a botched grounder and advancing her two second on a walk. A sac bunt to the pitcher put runners in scoring position and a passed ball drove home the unearned run. A walk on the subsequent batter departed senior starting pitcher Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.) after 1.1 innings of work, allowing three runs on one hit and picking up the eventual loss (1-6). Senior catcher Kylee Bishop (Tacoma, Wash.) helped sophomore reliever Megan Williams (Richmond, Va.) work out of the jam by throwing out Lindsay Kay Bright on the first pitch for the second out and Williams ended the inning, forcing junior Jamie LaBovick to ground out to short.
Williams was knocked out of the game in the fourth, after a solo home run from Gabby Luety, followed by a single from Chelsea Palumbo -with Williams letting up one run on three hits. Senior Noelle Sisco (Towaco, N.J.) allowed one hit before getting LaBovick to ground out to an inning ending double play.
Rutgers broke up Mineau's no-hitter in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out double from sophomore Alexis Durando (Oakland, N.J.) driving junior Jennifer Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) in from first, - who walked - putting RU at a three-run deficit (4-1) with three to play.
The Scarlet Knights put their first two batters on in the bottom of the sixth, a single to left from senior Lindsey Curran (Monroe Township, N.J.) and senior Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) getting hit by a pitch, but Mineau retired the next three batters, striking out two, to maintain the advantage headed into the seventh.
Fordham added insurance with two runs in the seventh, Sisco's only two runs allowed in 3.2 innings, to give the Rams a 6-1 lead. Rutgers put the lead runner on with a double from freshman Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) but were unable to bring her home.
Mineau (5-6) allowed one run on three hits with 14 strikeouts.
Rutgers concludes the weekend with two games on Sunday morning. The Scarlet Knights open with Penn State at 9 a.m. and wrap up with Northern Iowa at 11:15 a.m. Rutgers continues its Spring Break trip with a pair of midweek games, Long Island on Tuesday (11 a.m.) and the Netherlands National Team (noon) on Wednesday.
