Mangan Named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 19, 2012) - Senior midfielder Will Mangan (Maplewood, N.J.) has been named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the conference office on Monday. The co-captain scored his third and fourth hat tricks of the season and totaled seven points over RU's two-game stretch against Marist (March 13) and St. John's (March 17).
First-year head coach Brian Brecht commented on Mangan's honor, which is the third time this season a Scarlet Knight has been recognized by the league.
"This is a great honor for Will and one he has certainly earned," Brecht said. "He has been our best player this season as a true two-way midfielder, as well as taking the majority of the face-off wings and being the leader of our special teams units. Will has been a selfless leader, both on and off the field. I am certainly very excited for him that his play on the field has been recognized by the conference."
Mangan netted three goals and added one assist to total four points in the 10-9 win over Marist. In the one-goal setback against St. John's, Magan recorded a natural hat trick, scoring the first, second and third goals of the game for Rutgers. The Scarlet Knight also grabbed a team-best six ground balls against the Red Storm.
This is the third time in Mangan's career he has been recognized in the league's weekly awards (Feb. 28, 2011; Feb. 27, 2012). His latest accolade is the first offensive player of the week honor of his career.
RU next heads to Notre Dame on Sunday, March 25 for its second BIG EAST game of the year. The game at Arlotta Stadium is set to start at 1 p.m.
