PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 7, 2012) - Senior midfielder Michael Diehl (Flemington, N.J.) has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced by the conference office on Monday. Diehl scored the second hat trick of his career with a personal-best four goals in RU's April 7 game vs. No. 13 Villanova. His scoring outburst came entirely in the second half of the contest, pulling the Scarlet Knights within striking distance of the Wildcats before ultimately yielding the game.
First-year head coach Brian Brecht praised Diehl's recent efforts on the field for the Scarlet Knights. Three of his four scores against Villanova came on unassisted plays.
"It has been a pleasure seeing Michael play, work and improve all spring," Brecht said. "For the past three weeks, he has been up early shooting every morning. You can see it paying off, as he was a marksman this past weekend with the ball in his stick."
A starter in 25 of Rutgers' last 26 games, Diehl has scored a total of 21 points in 2012 on 18 goals and three assists. His goal count for his senior campaign has already matched his junior season total. Diehl's first hat trick as a Scarlet Knight came in his three-goal performance against St. John's.
The league honor is the first of Diehl's career and the sixth time a Rutgers player has been recognized this season.
The Scarlet Knights continue at Princeton on Tuesday, April 10, with action set to begin at 7 p.m. at Class of 1952 Stadium.
