Mangan Named USILA Scholar All-America
May 28 | Men's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 28, 2012) - Senior midfielder Will Mangan (Maplewood, N.J.) has been honored to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar All-America team, it was announced. The co-captain was recognized for both his Scholar All-America and All-America Honorable Mention awards at the USILA's annual All-America awards banquet on Sunday, May 28, held this year at the Marriott Copley Place in Boston, Mass.
The latest award for Mangan joins the co-captain's 2012 postseason haul of BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, All-BIG EAST First Team honoree, USILA/LaxWorld North-South Classic participant and USILA All-America Honorable Mention.
First-year head coach Brian Brecht was impressed by Mangan's focus on and off the field during the 2012 season.
"Will has been a true student-athlete for us all year," Brecht said. "He has worked hard to earn all his postseason awards. I am sure he is most proud of being named a Scholar All-American as he finishes his career. The rigors of Rutgers University academically and the level of competition on the lacrosse field proves this honor to be the most fulfilling as a Rutgers student-athlete."
A finance major, Mangan completed his final season "On the Banks" with his fifth hat trick of the year and sixth of his career at Georgetown on April 27. His three-goal, one-assist performance brought his senior totals to 40 points from 30 goals and 10 assists. Mangan finished second on the squad with 46 ground balls.
"We are going to miss Will's leadership, but I am confident he has laid the groundwork along with many of our other alumni," Brecht said. "They have all dedicated so much time to make Rutgers Lacrosse great and a special program that they feel proud to be a part of."
Mangan's recognition marks the fourth time in school history a Scarlet Knight has received Scholar All-America accolades. Jeff Duca (2003), Jamie Lovejoy (2004) and Brian Shemesh (2011) were previous honorees.
In 1989, the USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities. The USILA Selection Committee selects an overall team representing Division I, II and III. The Scholar All-Americans are recognized at the annual Lacrosse All-America Banquet.
