Rutgers Field Hockey Defeats No. 16 Drexel, 1-0

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 6, 2013) - The Rutgers field hockey team notched a hard-fought 1-0 victory over No. 16 Drexel on Sunday in Philadelphia, Pa. Senior Danielle Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.) scored the deciding goal.
The Scarlet Knights improved to 6-5, while the Dragons fell to 8-3. In addition to Freshnock, senior Laura Rose (Washington Township, N.J.) and freshmen Sofia Walia (Surrey, British Columbia) and Rachel Yaney (Bridgewater, N.J.) each posted a shot in the contest.
The win marked the first win for RU over a ranked opponent since taking down No. 19 Albany, 3-2, at home on Aug. 24, 2012. It was the second shutout the Scarlet Knights recorded this season, also defeating La Salle 4-0 on Sept. 6.
Freshman GK Shevaun Hayes (Melbourne, Australia) held Drexel scoreless, making a career-high nine saves.
Following a scoreless first half, Freshnock put the game's only goal in the back of the cage just 2:53 into the second half. RU would hold on to win pick up the 1-0 victory.
The Scarlet Knights are back in action Wednesday, Oct. 9, hosting Monmouth at the Bauer Track and Field Complex at 4 p.m.
