PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 7, 2013) - Rutgers field hockey freshman GK Shevaun Hayes (Melbourne, Australia) has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
"Shevaun was outstanding this weekend," said head coach Meredith Long. "Not only did she win the game for us in shootouts against Villanova, she also shut out nationally-ranked Drexel on Sunday."
Hayes did not give up a goal in 150:00 minutes of play. The freshman recorded a shutout against No. 16 Drexel (Oct. 6), making a career-high nine saves in the contest. She also notched the first shutout of her career against the Dragons. At Villanova on Oct. 4, Hayes picked up the win after coming in to start the second half in a game that went to a shootout, holding the Wildcats scoreless in 80:00 minutes of play.
Hayes earned the first Rutgers BIG EAST Player of the Week honor since classmate Lisa Patrone (Washington Township, N.J.) was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 8, 2012. She is the third Scarlet Knight to earn the recognition this season, as junior Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom) was honored on Sept. 2 and senior GK Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) was recognized on Sept. 9.
Rutgers next hosts Monmouth at the Bauer Track and Field Complex on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.
