Facing Off
The Rutgers men's lacrosse team will participate in its last road game of the season, taking on No. 7/8 Syracuse in the Carrier Dome on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. The game is scheduled to be broadcast live on SNY. It marks just the fourth road contest of the season for Rutgers.
Scouting the Syracuse Orange
No. 7/8 Syracuse holds an 8-2, including a 2-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The squad's only losses came to conference-opponent Villanova, 11-10 (March 23), and Albany, 16-15 2OT (Feb. 17). The Orange have won three-straight games, including wins over No. 2 Cornell (April 6) and No. 8 Princeton (April 10).
The Scarlet Knights hold a 9-40 record all-time against the Orange, dating back to 1924. Last season, Rutgers dropped a 19-6 contest to Syracuse on April 14. The Orange have won the last eight matchups, as RU defeated Syracuse 14-10 in 2004.
The Orange lead the conference with 12.70 goals per game (sixth in NCAA as of April 8), 7.60 assists per game (third in NCAA) and 20.30 points per game (fourth in NCAA). Syracuse is second in the conference in goals against average, allowing just 9.28 per contest (18th in NCAA).
Individually, the squad is led by JoJo Marasco, who is second on the conference with 2.20 assists per game and leads the team with 22 assists and 34 points. Derek Maltz paces Syracuse with 17 goals. In net, Dominic Lamolinara holds an 8.95 GAA.
Rutgers Falls to Princeton, 13-8
The Rutgers men's lacrosse team fell to No. 9/10 Princeton, 13-8, at Yurcak Field Tuesday night. The game was tied 6-6 late in the second quarter before the Tigers went on a 5-0 run to hold off the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers was led by redshirt junior M Matt Klimchak (Clark, N.J.), who tallied his second-straight hat trick and notched one assist for four points on the night.
Hat Trick for Matt Klimchak
Redshirt junior M Matt Klimchak (Clark, N.J.) has tallied two-straight hat tricks, scoring three goals at Villanova (April 6), before notching three against Princeton (April 9), to go along with one assist. His four points against the Tigers tied a career-high.
Collecting Them All
Sophomore FO Joseph Nardella (Cazenovia, N.Y.) collected eight ground balls vs. Princeton (April 9), leaving him with a team-high 106 on the season, to pass the century mark. He is third in the country as of April 8, collecting an average of 8.83 ground balls per game (first in the BIG EAST).
Parrilla/Contino Causing Turnovers
The Scarlet Knights caused a season-high 12 turnovers against Princeton (April 9). The output was led by a junior D Andrew Parrilla (Wyckoff, N.J.), who caused a career-high five turnovers. Classmate D Nick Contino (Branchburg, N.J.) matched his career-best with four CTs. Parrilla also collected a career-high six ground balls. Contino has caused a team-high 18 turnovers in 2013.
Facing Off Among the Nation's Best
Sophomore Joseph Nardella (Cazenovia, N.Y.) has been dominant in faceoffs all season, ranking third in the country (as of April 8) and first in the BIG EAST with a mark of .651 percent. The specialist is 185-284 this season. He is six FO wins shy of 300 for his career and in 10 more attempts will have taken 500 total in his two seasons.
Bank on Bieda
Freshman A Scott Bieda (Bridgewater, N.J.) has been on a hot streak lately and tallied a career-high three goals against Providence (March 30). He has notched one point in each of the last five games and has totaled seven multi-point games.
RU in the NCAA
The Scarlet Knights ranked tied for 27th in goals per game (10.18) and tied for 29th in points per game (16.27) in the nation as of April 8.
RU in the BIG EAST
Rutgers is second in ground balls (30.83/g), first in saves per game (13.58), second in save percentage (.562) and first in faceoff percentage (.647).
