PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers men's lacrosse team concluded its fall scrimmage schedule Saturday, traveling to Amherst, Mass. to take on UMass. Off the field, the game took on a bigger meaning, as the team worked to raise money for the Vs. Cancer Foundation.
In conjunction with the scrimmage, the team mounted a fundraising effort to help combat childhood cancer and raise money for cancer research efforts. The team set a goal of $5,000, and ended up raising $5,521 for the cause. The proceeds from the fundraising will go to help St. Peters' Hospital in New Brunswick.
"I'm very proud of our student athletes in their efforts to raise over $5,000 for this great cause," head coach Brian Brecht said. "To team up with the Vs. Cancer Foundation to bring awareness to supporting children fighting against cancer and having the proceeds help St. Peter's hospital here in New Brunswick, allow our young men to help out right here in our campus community."
The scrimmage against UMass was the final scrimmage for the fall schedule, which also included an exhibition against Keio University from Japan. This spring the squad will be part of the inaugural season of Big Ten Lacrosse.
