PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers got out to an early lead and held on, picking up a 2-1 victory over James Madison in nonconference action at the Bauer Track and Field Complex. Rachel Yaney (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Jasmine Cole (Montclair, N.J.) scored the two goals for the Scarlet Knights.
"It was a great win," head coach Meredith Long said. "JMU is a great team, they are fast and aggressive. The team executed so well up today. Our front line of Katie Champion, Rachel Yaney, and Jasmine Cole was dangerous and fun to watch. We fought hard for this win."
The Scarlet Knights have sought to capture the earlier momentum all season, and did so today by scoring on their first shot of the game. In the ninth minute of the game, Rutgers carried the ball up the right wing, and Cole sent a pass across the middle. Yaney controlled around a defender and sent it into the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead.
Just over 13 minutes later, Rutgers struck again. Again the ball was sent across from the right side, where senior captain Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom) deflected it to her left. Cole was stationed directly behind her and slammed the ball home. The goal was Cole's second tally of the year, and would stand up as the game winner.
JMU scored its lone goal of the day just two minutes after the second Rutgers tally. Erin Galivan got the goal, finishing a pass from the right post.
After that goal by the Dukes, the Rutgers defense tightened, playing a stout overall game on the back end. James Madison held possession in the offensive end for much of the game's final eight minutes, but the RU defense held off any quality chances and preserved the 2-1 margin of victory.
Rutgers held a 9-7 edge in shots, while JMU had three penalty corners to Rutgers' one. Goalkeeper Shevaun Hayes (Melbourne, Australia) stopped two of the three JMU shots on net.
The Scarlet Knights conclude the regular season next weekend with two home games at the Bauer Track and Field Complex. On Friday Rutgers welcomes Indiana at 1 p.m. for the Big Ten Conference finale, while the season finale will be against Penn at 1 p.m. Sunday for Senior Day.
GAME NOTES:
- Jasmine Cole scored her second goal of the season, her first since the season-opener against Bucknell on August 29.
- Rachel Yaney's goal was her third of the season.
- With Sophie Wright's assist, she moves into third on the team with nine points this season.
- The 2-1 win was Rutgers' 11th one goal victory of the season.
