Oct 07 | Men's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers men's lacrosse head Coach Brian Brecht has named junior attackman Scott Bieda (Bridgewater, N.J.), senior defenseman Nick Capparelli (Glen Head, N.Y.), senior midfielder Brian Goss (Arlington Heights, Ill.), and senior midfielder Joseph Nardella (Cazenovia, N.Y.) as captains for the 2015 season.
Goss will enter his third season as a Rutgers captain, while Nardella will be a captain for the second year in a row. Bieda and Capparelli are first time captains. The group has combined to play 134 games in a Scarlet Knights' uniform.
"I am proud and honored to announce this year's captains as voted on by the team," coach Brecht exclaimed. "All four have been true student-athletes on and off the field, helping Rutgers to its first ever Big East tournament appearance last season as well as having an overall 3.0 cumulative GPA. As we continue through our fall practices and workouts, we will lean on their leadership in preparing for our inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference."
Bieda is coming off of a stellar sophomore campaign in which earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors, finishing third in the conference with 1.6 assists per game. Bieda led the Scarlet Knights with 24 assists, and was second on the team overall with 42 points. For his career, he has 32 goals and 37 assists for 69 points in just two seasons.
Capparelli is in his second season at Rutgers after playing two seasons at Nassau CC, where he was a two-time captain. In 2014 at Rutgers he made seven starts on defense, causing four turnovers and recording six ground balls.
Goss will be a three-time captain this season, the first three-time captain under Coach Brecht. The senior has started 43 of his 45 games played at Rutgers. For his career he has recorded 40 goals and 19 assists for 59 points.
Nardella is a captain for the second consecutive season after earning the honors last season as a junior. Last season Nardella was a Second Team All- BIG EAST selection and Inside Lacrosse Midseason First Team All-American after posting a .632 (206-of-326) face-off winning percentage, which was the fifth best mark in the nation.
The Scarlet Knights wrap up their fall scrimmage schedule this weekend, with a contest on Saturday at UMass. In conjunction with the scrimmage, Rutgers will be raising money for the Vs. Cancer Foundation. Rutgers fans can donate directly to Rutgers' fundraising efforts here.
