2015 Schedule
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 13, 2014) - In anticipation of the newly formed Big Ten Conference lacrosse, the Rutgers men's lacrosse squad has announced its 2015 schedule. The slate will include 15 regular season games, with nine homes contests and six road matches.
The Big Ten Conference includes men's lacrosse-playing members John Hopkins, Maryland, Michigan, Penn State, and Ohio State. The Scarlet Knights will play each team for a total of five conference games.
"The team has been working very hard this fall as we are excited for the start of Big Ten Lacrosse," head coach Brian Brecht said. "My staff and I feel we have put together a very challenging non-conference schedule in addition to the rivalries we will be starting in the newly formed Big Ten Conference. We look forward to the challenge and understand the hard work, focus, and attention to detail it will take to be successful each and every opportunity we have this spring."
"Our home schedule and playing Big Ten Lacrosse in High Point Solutions Stadium makes the atmosphere of coming to Rutgers to watch a game very exciting for our alumni, recruits and fans."
Rutgers will play 10 non-conference games to open the year. The season opener is Saturday, February 7 at St. John's, who the Scarlet Knights defeated in a 16-13 thriller last year. The home opener at High Point Solutions Stadium is February 21, as RU welcomes the Virginia Cavaliers, who are coming off a NCAA Tournament appearance in 2014.
The non-conference schedule will also include home games against Wagner (Feb. 24), Monmouth (Feb. 28), Army (March 3) and Stony Brook (March 8). Last season the Scarlet Knights earned victories over Wagner (20-5), Army (9-8 in overtime) and Monmouth (20-4), while falling at Stony Brook.
A matchup at Delaware (March 14) followed by home games against Princeton (March 17) and NJIT (March 20) will conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule.
Rutgers' first Big Ten Conference game will be at John Hopkins on Saturday, March 28 at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays, who lead all schools with 44 national championships, join the Big Ten this season as an affiliate member for men's lacrosse only.
The Scarlet Knights will travel to Michigan on Sunday, April 5 to face the Wolverines. The meeting will be the second all-time matchup against Michigan, with Rutgers winning the previous meeting in 2012.
The first home game in Big Ten history will be Sunday, April 12 as Rutgers will host Maryland. The meeting with the Terrapins, who advanced to the Final Four in last year's NCAA Tournament, will be the first encounter since 1998.
The team then hits the road for a game at Penn State on Sunday, April 19, before concluding the regular season with the home finale against Ohio State. The matchup against the Buckeyes will be either Friday, April 24 or Saturday, April 25.
The inaugural Big Ten Tournament for men's lacrosse will be hosted by Maryland from Thursday, April 30th through Saturday, May 2 in College Park, Maryland. The NCAA Tournament will begin on May 9.
