PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 17, 2014) - Rutgers field hockey sophomore back Sofia Walia (Surrey, British Columbia) was named to the 2014 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced today. Walia is the first Rutgers player to be named First Team All-Region since Amy Lewis in 2007.
"This award recognizes the contribution that Sofia made to the team this season," head coach Meredith Long said. "She was a key player in our defensive unit as well as a consistent contributor on offense where she scored crucial goals. It is an award that is well deserved."
Walia was an impact player for the Scarlet Knights on the offensive and defensive ends. She provided a stout presence at center back for RU, while also posting seven goals, six assists and 20 points. The sophomore was tied for the team lead with three defensive saves and also had two game-winning goals. She was previously named Second Team All-Big Ten Conference.
The recognition is the second straight All-Region recognition for the sophomore. Walia, along with Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom), was named to the Second Team All-Region Team last year.
With the help of Walia, Rutgers put together a 9-10 campaign, finishing with nine wins for the third consecutive season, and earning a berth to the Big Ten Conference Tournament.
