Field Hockey Falls to Iowa, 3-0

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers field hockey dropped its Big Ten Conference opener, falling 3-0 to Iowa in front of 266 fans at Bauer Track and Field Complex. Iowa held a 1-0 lead at halftime, and scored two goals in the second half to clinch the victory.
With the loss, Rutgers falls to 4-3 on the season. Iowa improves to 5-2.
"I'm happy with how we performed overall," head coach Meredith Long said. "We couldn't take advantage of our attacking opportunities today. At the end of the day, Iowa did, and that was the difference maker. We're generating good attacking opportunities, but we need to be able to capitalize. We need to do that to be able to compete in the Big Ten."
Natalie Cafone scored two goals for the Hawkeyes, including her first just four minutes into the contest. Sara Watro also tallied for Iowa.
The Scarlet Knights backline held Iowa in check for long periods of the game, but were unable to find the net on the offensive end.
Goalkeeper Shevaun Hayes (Melbourne, Australia) made eight saves in the loss. Iowa put 12 shots on net for the game, with Rutgers putting two shots on net.
"Shevaun played outstanding today," Long said. "She's a top goalkeeper and she made a couple of really big saves today. We just gave them a little bit too much space and time and they capitalized."
Rutgers is back on the road for its next two games. RU will face Northwestern at 4 p.m. on Friday before a game at Michigan on Sunday.
