PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 5, 2014) –Rutgers field hockey took its first loss of the season as the Scarlet Knights dropped a 6-1 decision on Friday at Bauer Track & Field Complex.
Temple was in control early in the game, scoring the first goal just 76 seconds into the contest. The Owls would not relinquish that lead, scoring three times in the first 12 minutes of the game.
Rutgers’ lone goal came 15 minutes into the first half. Alicia Stever (Ocean City, N.J.) sent a long shot in from the top of the circle. Forward Nicole Imbriacco (Clark, N.J.) got her stick on the ball in front of the net, redirecting it past the Owls’ goaltender for her second goal of the season.
Temple would add one more goal in the first half, taking a 4-1 edge into halftime.
In the second half, Temple added two more goals to clinch a 6-1 final margin. Rutgers would put continual pressure on the Temple net, but was unable to add to their score.
Tricia Light scored three goals to lead the Owls, with Alyssa Delp, Nicole Kroener, and Rachael Mueller also scoring in the game.
Rutgers held an overall edge in shots for the game, 19-16. Goalkeeper Shevaun Hayes (Melbourne, Australia) stopped six shots but took her first loss of the season, falling to 2-1 on the year. Temple held a 7-6 edge in penalty corners, as Rutgers garnered five penalty corners in the second half as they tried to push back into the game.
"Temple really capitalized on their opportunities early on, especially on set pieces," head coach Meredith Long explained. "Our second half I though we started to click and play well together. It was a good lesson that we have to get it done early and we can't let a team get ahead like that because it's hard to come back from."
Next up for the Scarlet Knights is a home game this Sunday against Lafayette. RU will welcome the Leopards for a 1 p.m. start.
