PISCATAWAY, N.J. - In a Friday afternoon battle at the Bauer Track & Field Complex, Rutgers field hockey took Penn State to the wire, but fell 3-2 in overtime. The Nittany Lions improve to 6-8, 2-3 Big Ten, while the Scarlet Knights fall to 6-8, 0-6 Big Ten.
RU freshman Linde van Schaik scored her first career goal, while senior Katie Champion also tallied in the game. PSU had a 22-10 advantage in shots and took 15 corners to Rutgers' four.
Penn State scored first, tallying 4:26 into the game. Brooke Birosik scored her team-leading six goal of the season from the left post.
Rutgers answered back 13 minutes later. The team earned a penalty stroke, and the freshman van Schaik converted to tie the game at 1-1.
As time ran down in the first half, PSU earned a corner. The team finished with a goal from Carly Celkos to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Rutgers evened the game at 2-2 just five minutes into the half. Rachel Yaney slid a pass backwards and Champion finished, tying the game.
The game was even at the end of the second half, and went into an overtime session. In the first minute of the extra frame, Stephanie Hussey converted a one-timer to give the Nittany Lions the win.
Next up for Rutgers is Sunday, a noon start against Maryland. The game will be Senior Day, with the program honoring seniors Katie Champion, Carley Hawkins, Nicole Imbriaco and Ali Stever prior to the game.

Shevaun Hayes made six saves in the game for RU.
Linde van Schaikhad the first goal of her career. She previously had three assists and leads RU players with five points this year.
Katie Champion scored her 20th career goal. She now has 52 points for her career.
She is now tied for 10th on Rutgers' career goals leaderboard with Patricia Bornheimer and Cindy Cavallaro.
She is also tied for 10th on Rutgers' career points leaderboard, with Kelly Ryan, Meredith Pizulli and Melissa Schepacarter.
This was RU's second overtime game of the year, both being losses against Big Ten opponents.
