Box Score

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - No. 23 Rutgers women's soccer put together one of its most dominant performances of the season Thursday night versus Indiana at Yurcak Field, defeating the Hoosiers, 2-0.

The Scarlet Knights (10-2-1, 3-2-1 Big Ten) saw senior Samantha Valliant (Markham, Ontario, Canada) score her team-leading third game-winning goal in the 21st minute before classmate Hayley Katkowski (Westford, Mass.) shut the door with a goal in the final 30 seconds of the first half.

In total, Rutgers outshot Indiana (3-6-5, 0-3-3 Big Ten), 25-7, on the night for the team's biggest shot total of the year.

"We had a great week of training and we worked a lot in the final third and on our possession," said head coach Mike O'Neill. "I thought we possessed the ball really well coming out of the back, into the midfield and into the final third.

"Now the last piece of the puzzle is to just to put more sophistication in the box; that's where your goals are scored from. We like what we did, we like what we created, and now it's time to get better in that area of the field."

RU's opening goal of the match started with senior defender Maggie Morash (Bernardsville, N.J.) along the far side near the end line. Morash crossed the ball middle off the head of Valliant and into the back of the net. The assist earned her the first point of her career.

With time winding down in the first half, Katkowski got in on the scoring with her second goal of the year.

Freshman defender Kenie Wright (Mount Laurel, N.J.) sent a corner kick into the box to center back Erica Skroski (Galloway, N.J.), who headed the ball forward to Katkowski. Katkowski finished the play off by pushing the ball passed Indiana keeper, Sarah Stone, with her right foot.

The assist earned Wright the first point of her young career. Skroski tallied her third assist of the season on the play.

RU and sophomore goalkeeper Casey Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J.) posted their 10th shutout win of the season. Murphy made four saves.

Rutgers treks to Purdue on Sunday, Oct. 11 for a 1 p.m. meeting with the Boilermakers in West Lafayette, Ind. The match will stream live online via BTN Plus.
