2016 Schedule
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (December 9, 2015) - Rutgers men's lacrosse announced its 2016 schedule today. The slate for RU's second season as a member of the Big Ten includes 14 regular season games, with seven home contests and seven road matches. The season begins at home on Feb. 13 versus St. John's, and finishes with five of the last seven games at home.
The Big Ten Conference includes men's lacrosse-playing members John Hopkins, Maryland, Michigan, Penn State and Ohio State. The Scarlet Knights will play each team for a total of five conference games. Three of those contests will be played at home, with RU welcoming Johns Hopkins, Maryland and Penn State to High Point Solutions Stadium this year.
"The challenges of our early non-conference schedule will certainly prepare us well for our second season in the Big Ten," head coach Brian Brecht said. "Our players have worked extremely hard this fall and are excited for the season. We are especially excited to host three Big Ten games at High Point Solutions Stadium."
Rutgers will play nine non-conference games to open the year. The opener will be against the Red Storm for the second consecutive year. The Scarlet Knights won 10-8 last season in Queens. That will be followed by a road trip to Michie Stadium (Feb. 20) to face Army West Point, who were ranked No. 9 in the nation last season when they edged RU, 9-7.
A home game against Fairfield is the following Saturday, followed by four straight road games in either New Jersey or New York. The road swing will begin with Wagner, Monmouth and Stony Brook, before concluding in Princeton on Tuesday, March 15. The matchup against the Tigers is the most played series in program history, as the schools will meet for the 94th time in a series dating back to 1922.
Four straight home games follow that for RU, beginning with a pair of teams that Rutgers defeated last season. March 18 brings a contest against NJIT, and Saturday, March 26 is a night game against Delaware, who the Scarlet Knights vanquished 17-12 last year for a road victory.
Conference play begins at home on Saturday, April 2, with a 7 p.m. contest against Johns Hopkins, last season's Big Ten Tournament champions. The following Sunday (April 10) Rutgers will host Michigan at noon.
RU will travel to NCAA runner-up Maryland for a road contest on Saturday, April 16. The home finale follows that as Penn State comes to "The Banks" for a 6 p.m. game on Saturday, April 23, which will be this year's Alumni Appreciation Day and Senior Day. Then the regular season will take place on Saturday, April 30 at Ohio State, who Rutgers upset 17-10 last season for its first Big Ten conference victory.
This season's Big Ten Tournament will be in Baltimore, hosted by Johns Hopkins from May 5-7.
