PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers will look to build on a 1-0 start this weekend when they play their second straight road contest to begin the year, as the Scarlet Knights travel south to face the Richmond Spiders. Game time is 12 p.m. for the matchup at Robins Stadium. The game will be streamed live by SpidersTV, with a $4.95 fee for a 24-hour access pass.
The Scarlet Knights downed St. John's last Saturday, opening the season with a 10-8 road victory. RU was led by four goals from Christian Trasolini and multi-goal outputs from newcomers Jeff George and Jules Heningburg. Kris Allenye made 11 saves in the cage while Joe Nardella won 11 times at the faceoff 'X' and scooped nine ground balls. Trasolini, Rutgers' leading returning goal scorer, was named Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week.
Richmond is in its second season for men's lacrosse. In the Spiders' inaugural campaign, they posted a 6-11 record, but captured the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament and earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament. Richmond defeated St. Joseph's 9-5 in last weekend's season opener. Spiders' goalie Benny Pugh was named Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week after making 15 saves and leading the team with four ground balls. VMI transfer Mickey Hofmeister led Richmond offensively with three goals in his Spiders' debut.
Last season, the Scarlet Knights earned a 10-7 home victory over Richmond in the first ever meeting between the two programs. Joe Nardella was 18-of-18 at the faceoff "X" to spark RU. Scott Klimchak posted four goals to lead Rutgers, while returners Scott Bieda (three goals) and Brian Goss (two goals) also had multi-goal performances. The Scarlet Knights collected 42 ground balls and held a 46 to 30 advantage in shots.
The Scarlet Knights have five players on the roster (Connor Murphy, Michael Rexrode, Branford Rogers, Steve Hillenbrand and Zack Sikora) who are Virginia natives. The Spiders boast four players from New Jersey. Rutgers' Christian Mazzone and Richmond midfielder A.J. Lapitino were high school teammates at Ward Melvillle HS in East Setauket, New York.
