CLEARWATER, FLA. (MARCH 13, 2015) - The Rutgers softball team grabbed two wins on Friday afternoon to open the Michele Spring Break Tournament, defeating UW-Green Bay, 11-5, and UMass, 8-5.
The Scarlet Knights improve to an overall record of 8-6, while the Phoenix fall to 2-7 and the Minutewomen drop to 4-6.
GAME ONE
Rutgers opened the day with an 11-5 victory over UW-Green Bay.
Following two scoreless innings, freshman Rebecca Hall (Fairfax, Va.) registered her first collegiate home run to put RU on the board first in the bottom of the third.
Green Bay moved in front with two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Phoenix lead would not last long. Senior Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) sent a homer over the center field fence, scoring two runs in the process to put the Scarlet Knights back in front, 3-2.
The Phoenix responded with a three-run homer from Johnson to reclaim the lead, 5-4, in the top of the sixth. However, the RU bats came alive in the bottom of the inning.
Bates led off by drawing a walk, followed by a single from junior Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.). Classmate Melanie Slowinski (Severn, Md.) continued with a double to score Bates. Junior Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) added a single of her own to the rally, sending both Whitley and Slowinski across the plate. Huang would cross the plate herself via a double from freshman Sierra Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.).
The Scarlet Knights were not finished yet as junior Elizabeth Adams (Crystal Lake, Ill.) blasted a single up the middle to score two more runs. Junior Chandler Howard (North Wilmington, Del.) capped off the rally, bringing in two runs on a double. Overall, RU recorded eight runs on seven hits to generate an 11-5 advantage.
Junior right-hander Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) and the defense recorded a quick 1-2-3 and out inning to end the game with a victory for RU.
GAME TWO
Rutgers continued its momentum in its second game of the day, claiming an 8-5 victory over UMass.
After adding three runs in the first inning and an additional two in the second, Rutgers had established a 5-0 lead over UMass on a total of six hits.
The Minutewomen countered with a four-run inning on four hits in the top of the third, making it a one-run game at 5-4.
Senior lefty Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) retired three consecutive Minutewomen at the plate to stump their momentum in the top of the fourth.
Rutgers would go on to cushion its lead in second half of the inning. A walk from Howard followed by a double from Bates put runners in scoring position. Whitley would send in Howard, while a sac fly from Hall scored Bates to extend RU's advantage to 8-4.
The Minutewomen were able to get one more across, but that is as close as they would come. The Scarlet Knights added on a final run on an RBI double from Hall for the game's final margin of 8-5.
