PISCATAWAY, N.J.- Rutgers and Princeton will face off on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. to renew the longest played series in RU lacrosse history. The Scarlet Knights will face No. 10/13 Princeton for the 93rd time lifetime, in a series that dates back to 1922. The matchup will be Rutgers third game this season against a top-10 foe. There will be a live stream of the game available on BTN Plus with Danny Breslauer and Rick Mercurio on the call. Princeton will have a radio broadcast of the game on WPRB FM 103.3.
Rutgers is 29-60-3 all-time against Princeton. Last season, the Scarlet Knights dropped a 15-11 game at the then-No. 17 Tigers. Connor Murphy led the squad with three goals, and Joe Nardella won 20-of-30 faceoffs.
Since 1922, the teams have played every year except 1944 and 1945. Princeton is RU's most played opponent in its history. The two have played for the Harland W. "Tots" Meistrell Cup since 1958. Through the efforts of Meistrell, lacrosse was reinstated at RU in 1920. Following that season, Meistrell went to Princeton and re-started the program there. Meistrell was inducted into the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1962.
Tuesday's St. Patrick's Day showdown will be the "Luck of the Irish" game. Fans can enter a raffle for a $25 and $50 RU Express Gift Card, to be given away in the second half.
The Scarlet Knights enter the matchup after an offensive outburst at Delaware in a 17-12 victory. Scott Bieda scored a career-high five goals, Christian Trasolini had four goals of his own, and Jeff George had a career-best five points (one goal, four assists). Joe Nardella won 18-of-31 faceoffs, collected 13 ground balls, tallied two goals and three assists, and was named the Big Ten Conference Specialist of the Week for his efforts. Junior Kris Alleyne got the start in goal and recorded 10 saves in the victory. Rutgers has gotten a double-digit save total in all of their victories this season.
Princeton enters the game at 4-1 on the season, coming off a 17-11 victory at Penn on Saturday. The Tigers have already faced two Big Ten opponents on the year, both on the road, downing Johns Hopkins 16-15 in overtime and falling 11-4 at Maryland. Offensively, Mike MacDonald leads PU with 13 goals, 15 assists and 28 points. Sam Bonafede is 55-of-97 (.567) on faceoffs with a team-best 21 ground balls. In net, Eric Sanschagrin has stopped 52.3 percent of shots with a 10.63 goals-against average.
