Mar 29 | Softball
WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. (March 29, 2014) - A home run from junior Melanie Slowinski (Severn, Md.) in the tenth inning lifted Rutgers softball to a 2-1 victory over Purdue on Sunday afternoon at the Boilermaker Softball Stadium. The Scarlet Knights claimed the series over the Boilermakers with the win.
RU improves to an overall record of 14-9 and a mark of 4-2 in Big Ten play. Purdue falls to a record of 23-11 overall and a 4-2 mark in conference action.
Junior Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) led the team with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, while classmate Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) followed with a 2-for-3 showing, in addition to one run in the win.
On the first pitch of the game, Huang crushed a triple deep into left field. Whitley then knocked her in with an RBI single to put RU up 1-0 in the opening inning.
Senior lefy Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) would only face three batters in second half of the first. After Purdue's Alyssa Koorsen was caught stealing second, Landrithretired two straight to quickly exit the inning.
In the following stanza, the Rutgers defense held strong, working a double play to send the first two Boilermakers at the plate back to the dugout. Landrith delivered her second strikeout of the day to conclude the second.
Although RU was unable to get anything across in the top of the third, Landrith never let up as she stranded the Boilermakers' leading runs by retiring the final hitter to escape the inning unharmed.
Following three scoreless innings from either side, the Scarlet Knights and the Boilermakers entered a rain delay in the top of the fifth.
Upon returning to action, Purdue got one across via one hit and an error to even the score, 1-1, in the bottom half of the inning. Prior to the then, Landrith had held the game hitless and scoreless for four straight frames.
The Scarlet Knights loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but were unable to get a run across. However, Landrith worked a 1-2-3 inning to push the game into extra innings.
In the top of the tenth, Slowinski reclaimed the lead for RU with a homer over the left field fence. Landrith then sealed the victory with another 1-2-3 inning to earn her eighth win of the season.
