Rutgers Game Notes
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -Rutgers (10-20, 2-15) returns to the Big Ten road to meet Michigan (14-15, 7-10) in a 2:15 p.m. (ET) tip-off on Saturday at the 12,707-seat Crisler Center in Ann Arbor. RU is seeking a return to the win column, while UM is looking to bounce back after consecutive road defeats. The Scarlet Knights' schedule is currently rated No. 10 nationally in the ESPN Daily RPI. The contest versus the Wolverines marks the first time Rutgers will meet an opponent with a record below .500 since it defeated Monmouth, 59-58, on Dec. 28 in the non-conference finale.
The game will mark the final regular season contest before the Big Ten Conference Championship, which will be held March 11-15 at the United Center in Chicago. The Scarlet Knights are presently the No. 14 seed and will play the No. 11 seed at approximately 6 p.m. (CT) on BTN on Wednesday, March 11.
Saturday afternoon's game will be televised live nationally on BTN with Joe Davis calling the action and Shon Morris providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. On a mobile device, follow Rutgers IMG Sports Network on the TuneIn Radio app. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Dick Lloyd will provide commentary.
The game will mark the seventh meeting on the collegiate hardwood between Rutgers and Michigan dating back to 1933 with the Wolverines holding a 6-0 advantage. RU held UM to just 35 percent (17-of-49) shooting and won the battle on the boards, 35-34, but dropped a 54-50 decision to the Wolverines at the RAC on Jan. 20. Senior guard Myles Mack led all scorers with 15 points while also securing a team-high eight rebounds. The Wolverines came out ahead in a pair of significant post-season meetings. No. 9 UM defeated No. 4 RU, 86-70, in the 1976 NCAA Final Four at the Spectrum in Philadelphia to provide the Scarlet Knights their first loss of the season after 31 victories with Eddie Jordan serving as point guard. Michigan also downed Rutgers 62-55 in the 2004 NIT Final at Madison Square Garden.
Despite a career-high 14 points from junior forward Greg Lewis and a career-best 16 rebounds from Kadeem Jack, Rutgers fell to No. 10/9 Maryland, 60-50, on Tuesday at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights established a 21-8 advantage in second chance points in the hard-fought defeat. RU held UM to a 39 percent (22-for-57) shooting and out-rebounded the Terrapins, 42-38.
Michigan, under the leadership of eighth-year head coach John Beilein, has been ranked as high as No. 17/16 this season. The Wolverines dropped an 82-78 overtime decision at Northwestern on Tuesday. The Wolverines led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but NU benefitted from a 38-10 advantage in points in the paint. Sophomore Zak Irvin is UM's active leading scorer with 14.1 points-per-game. The Wolverines rank 10th nationally in turnovers (9.9) and 13th in free throw percentage (75.4).
